Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity & Representation

Modeling diversity matters.  Representation in media matters.  Guided by our Diversity Advisory Committee, we work to ensure that diversity and representation are not just buzzwords that are used to describe what our little viewers see on screen, but rather a dedication to the work of weaving diversity through the very fabric of everything we do. We do our research and work hard to ensure that the music and art of a culture is presented authentically and by someone with the authority to share it.

Across the My Music Starts Here content and across each season of Songs and Stories, children will see people that look like them, sound like them, or come from a similar cultural background.  They will also see people that look very different from them, sound different from them, and come from very different cultural backgrounds.  They will see real people intentionally and lovingly finding connection with each other through the universal language of music and mutual respect.  They will hear and learn about music from all over the world, providing them with a deep connection to cultures different from their own that spans across time and distance.

Music is a common language, no matter who you are, where you come from, what you look like, or who you love. Music is a universal human experience and the perfect setting to share a celebration of diversity with children.

Equity & Inclusion

As musicians, educators, and parents we are fierce advocates for educational equity and strive to make sure that throughout all of our content, a child does not need any supplemental materials in order to participate fully.

Our Educational Advisory Team ensures that all of our extended learning plans are equitable for all children and require very limited, if any, materials in order to participate fully in the activity.

We consult regularly with speech and occupational therapists to make sure that our content is appropriate for all children regardless of their abilities.

Our Pledge

We pledge to continue listening, learning, and growing. We pledge to always work against perpetuating damaging stereotypes.  We pledge to always try our best. We are human, and sometimes we might mess up. If you have a suggestion for how we could be doing better to honor Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in our work, please let us know. We would be honored to have that conversation.
